Tech Support Tip: Easier Collection of Open Ended Survey Replies
As a Snap Survey Software user, you know there are many powerful features. Here is another tip we’d like to pass on to our users.
Some questions require respondents to enter responses in detail in an open ended box (comment question box). Previously, when data lengths were applied and the box size was more than one row in size, the data length would essentially be ignored. Respondents were able to enter more characters than the data length set, but when the data was imported it would be truncated to meet the data length. To resolve that issue the Auto-Extend on import feature was added in Data Entry Tailoring.
Learn more about Auto-Extend on import in Snap Online Help.
Now, when a data length is set and the box size is greater than one row, you can still ensure that the data length will in fact be followed. The Limit the length of multi-line responses setting found in Questionnaire Properties: Interview section will allow the data length to be followed.

The new features that have been added regarding the data length are the Character Counters. You can insert these into the Footnote of open ended questions to allow the respondents to know how many characters they have remaining, the total available, and/or the total they have used. These can be inserted through Font (2nd dropdown) > Insert… > Response Property.

Learn how to translate your survey using Snap Survey Software
There are several ways of translating surveys in Snap Survey Software.
- You can write the translation yourself (create a new language edition, and type in the translation)
- You can use an external translator (create a text file to be translated, and import the translated file)
- You can use pre-translated questions (create all the language editions that you need, and add a question that already has translations)
- Get Snap Survey Software to automatically translate all the questions it recognizes using reference questions (open the reference window and then use the Translation Wizard).
As an added bonus, if you use standard questions, you can add them to a multi-lingual SurveyPak. This allows you to re-use multi-langual questions in other surveys, either by adding them directly to a multi-lingual survey, or using the automatic translation function.
Learn how-to randomize the order of question pages using Snap Survey Software
When you present a respondent with a survey, their answers are influenced by the order in which questions are presented. This is known as an order-effect. Because of this, you may want to randomize the order of your survey questions, so that this effect is minimized.
Using Snap Survey Software, you can you can randomize the order of possible responses in a multiple choice question, rows in a grid question, or question pages. When given a list of options, respondents are more likely to choose the first option (primacy effect) or the last option (recency effect) rather than the middle options. In a list of questions, respondents may develop fatigue when they answer the later questions, and tend to put less effort into answering them. To minimize this effect, you can randomize the order of question pages. This keeps the survey questions on the pages in the same order, but randomizes just the pages of the survey by using the Randomize tool provided in Snap Survey Software.
When is the best time to survey new employees? The answer may surprise you.
You may think that you need to give employees at least a few months to get acclimated to their new position, job environment, and get a feel for office dynamics within your company. However, there is no better time to survey new employees than from the very beginning. Or better yet, survey potential hires during the hiring process with a pre-employment survey.
It may seem odd to survey interviewees during the hiring process, but from the start, it is important for your business to:
- Show potential employees that your company cares about the continued success of the business and its employees, and
- Gauge how a potential new hire will react to your company’s work environment and how they will adapt to the work culture.
Avoid over-surveying your customers with these strategies
