Avoid over-surveying your customers with these strategies
Surveying your customers is a great way to learn more about customer satisfaction, areas where your products, services, or overall organization needs improvement, perceptions about your brand, and many more. However, over-surveying your customer base can cause a decline in response rates and may also weaken the value of your surveys.
Your customers are flooded with requests for feedback through online and email surveys, mobile devices, and through many social media outlets. Don’t be that organization that inundates their customers with incessant requests for feedback.
Here are six strategies to tactfully gather feedback from customers while at the same time ensuring that you are not overwhelming your customers, or worse, damaging the customer relationship. Continue reading
Create a grid question with both multi-choice and open comment survey questions
If you are creating an online survey, it is usually best to use dynamic text substitution and routing to adapt your questions to your respondents’ answers. This also means that you can have more flexibility with the width of survey layouts, so they can be used with mobile surveys to optimize the viewable space on mobile devices as well as viewable space on kiosks and computers screens. However, if you are creating a survey that is used both online and on paper, you may wish to combine grid questions in a different way.
Snap Survey Software cannot assume what size screen or size paper you will be using to print your paper survey. Snap also can’t be sure whether questions are going to be visible, because you might add masking or routing, so questions will appear and disappear differently for diverse respondents. As a result, Snap uses percentages of the total area to properly layout your survey questions. This guarantees that the questions will fit in the layout and mode in which you administer your survey to respondents. Continue reading

Use routing to limit what questions are displayed in an online survey
Our latest worksheet for Snap Survey Software users describes how to set-up a satisfaction survey where respondents select items to rate from a multi-choice list. The associated rating question is only displayed for the selected item. This is done using simple routing.
Routing allows you to display questions depending on respondents’ previous answers. There are three types of routing:
1. Conditionally Ask Question. This only displays a question if certain conditions are met, e.g. if the respondent has given specific answers to one or more previous questions.
2. Goto On Answer. This moves a respondent through the survey depending which answer is selected. It’s normally used to jump sections of a survey according to the response to a single-response question. Continue reading
How-to: Merge two identically structured surveys using Snap Survey Software
Merging two identically structured surveys using Snap Survey Software is very simple. It may be required to merge surveys in the following situations:
- Surveys administered on an annual basis. It may be of interest to analyze trends through two or more years. It would be fairly common for the survey to change slightly from year to year, so those alterations must be taken into account.
- Surveys on one subject, but with a variety of different focal points. For example, a software company may administer a survey with the same topic and similar questions to software users and another version to non-users.
- Surveys conducted for different locations or sites. For example, a survey of similar tourist attractions can be administered, but varies between sites because of the specific facilities available at each site.
- Surveys conducted using two different interviewing methods. For example, data from an online survey can be merged with data from a paper survey or a mobile survey. Continue reading

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Surveys?
Surveys are easy to develop, especially when using the advanced survey software solutions available today. Many researchers are tempted to do much of their data collection online; however, it is not always the preferred mode of data collection, especially if respondents are in hard-to-reach areas. Whether a researcher uses an online survey, mobile survey, paper survey, or a combination of all modes, the mode should depend on the type of study and the demographics of respondents.
Online surveys and mobile surveys tend to be the most cost-effective modes of survey research, yet they may not reach those respondents that can only respond using alternate modes. Results of online surveys and mobile surveys may suffer and differ greatly if important respondents are left out of the research. Hard-to-reach respondents may be easier to reach using more traditional methods such as paper surveys or face-to-face interviews. Continue reading
