The example uses a translation from English to Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"o27418\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>There are several ways of translating surveys in Snap.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can write the translation yourself (create a new language edition, and type in the translation)<\/li>\n<li>You can use an external translator (create a text file to be translated, and import the translated file)<\/li>\n<li>You can use pre-translated questions (create all the language editions that you need, and add a question that already has translations)<\/li>\n<li>Get Snap to automatically translate all the questions it recognises using reference questions (open the reference window and then use the Translation Wizard).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you use standard questions, you can add them to a multi-lingual SurveyPak, and then re-use them in other surveys, either by adding them directly to a multi-lingual questionnaire, or using the automatic translation facility.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"o27421\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Summary of steps<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"h27436\" title=\"Step 1: Exporting the original version of your survey\" href=\"#o27422\" target=\"_self\">Step 1: Exporting the original version of your survey<\/a><br \/>\n<a id=\"h27437\" title=\"Sending the file to the translator\" href=\"#o27425\" target=\"_self\">Step 2: Sending the file to the translator<\/a><br \/>\n<a id=\"h27438\" title=\"Step 3: Importing the new translated file\" href=\"#o27426\" target=\"_self\">Step 3: Importing the new translated file<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"o27422\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Exporting the original version of your survey<\/h3>\n<p>This worksheet assumes that you have created your questionnaire in one language before you start.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/questionnaire.png\" alt=\"Questionnaire window: design mode\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>\u00a0or press [Ctrl] + [Q] to see the questionnaire window.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>File|Translation<\/strong> to display the <strong>Translation Wizard<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Prepare External Translation<\/strong> from the <strong>Action <\/strong>menu.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/export_file_pre.png\" alt=\"Translation wizard first page drop-down\" width=\"449\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>[Next]<\/strong>. Select <strong>Reference file<\/strong> <strong>only\u00a0<\/strong>to create a list of the phrases that need translating.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/export_file_tw.png\" alt=\"Export translation file only\" width=\"449\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you already have translated some of the questions, export to a <strong>Reference with a matched translation<\/strong>. This creates two files, one with the list of text to be translated, and one with the list of texts that have been translated (with gaps for untranslated text).<\/li>\n<li>Make a note of the <strong>File name\u00a0<\/strong>you use so you can find it later. Check the <strong>Omit repeated content<\/strong> box to leave out phrases that are used in multiple places (for example, ratings questions might all have the same possible answers).<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>[Start]<\/strong> to generate your file. When the export has completed, you will be given a brief report.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/trans_report_simple.png\" alt=\"Translation report: export successful\" width=\"398\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you want to keep a copy of the report, click<strong> [Send To]<\/strong> to save it to a file.<\/li>\n<li>Click<strong> [OK] <\/strong>to clear the window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"o27425\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Sending the file to the translator<\/h3>\n<p>You now have a text file that you can send to your translator. They need to produce a translated file that matches the file that the translation wizard has produced. It needs to have the same number of lines and the same instructions to the translation wizard. These should not be translated. It also needs to be a plain text file (not a Word document).<\/p>\n<p>The instructions are used to describe the question, and are all in capitals. Ensure that it has the same number of lines as the original, and all the lines in capitals are the same as in the original file.<\/p>\n<p>You will need the original exported file as well as the translated file.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the questionnaire window for your survey. The example shows a survey that has only one language. This will add a new language edition to your questionnaire.
