You can choose whether this is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the count (number of respondents who chose that response)<\/li>\n<li>the percentage (number of respondents as a percentage of the total).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This worksheet explains how to create a bar chart that shows <strong>both<\/strong> the counts and the percentage values on a single chart:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_2d_noy_pct.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"386\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: To show\u00a0either counts <strong>or<\/strong> percents on a bar chart, use the preconfigured chart styles supplied with Snap: <strong>Bar Counts Labelled<\/strong> or <strong>Bar percent labelled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"o26327\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>Bar charts are different from tables because you can only display one value for each bar (the height of the bar on the scale).<\/p>\n<p>You can represent counts and percentage values together in a table.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/count_perc_table.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"164\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For a bar chart, the height of the bar must be either the counts or the percentage. If you want to display both the counts and the percentage value, you need to pass in the counts and use the <strong>Chart Designer<\/strong> to calculate the percentages from the counts.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"o26340\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>More about the bar chart styles<\/h3>\n<p>The examples below use the <strong>Bar 2D<\/strong> style to display an item in the <strong>Analysis <\/strong>field.<\/p>\n<p>If you enter a term in the <strong>Analysis <\/strong>field, the Snap bar chart styles identify the separate items by colour, and use a key to tell you which bar is associated with which question or question code.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16712\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_2d8.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"391\" height=\"284\" \/><br \/>\nIf you enter a term in the <strong>Break <\/strong>field, the Snap bar chart styles identify the separate item by labelling the X-axis below the bars. (This also happens if you enter the term in the Analysis field and check <strong>Transpose<\/strong>.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_2d8_transp.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"430\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can enter analysis terms in both the <strong>Analysis <\/strong>and the <strong>Break <\/strong>fields (as for a cross-tabulation) and see the results displayed as a bar chart.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_2d8_xtab.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"456\" height=\"339\" \/><br \/>\nIf you are only using a single term, you can choose whether to have your bars identified by a colour key or labelled.<\/p>\n<p>If you want your chart to give the exact values for each bar, you can display them on the chart.<\/p>\n<p>Bar chart of counts using the<strong> Bar 2D Transposed Labelled<\/strong> style. The base percents shown in the table are calculated as the percentage of all the respondents that gave that response.<\/p>\n<p>If you are charting a single-response question, the total number of responses is probably the same as the number of respondents. If you are charting a multi-response question, there will be more responses than respondents.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Chart Designer <\/strong>can&#8217;t work out how many respondents there are from the number of responses, so it can&#8217;t calculate the percentages automatically. The style displays counts and percentages on the bars.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_wrong_perc.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"361\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Compare the percentage figures on the chart to the figures on the table. You will see that they do not match. This is because the figures on the chart are calculated automatically using the size of the largest bar. To make the figures display correctly, you need to tell the <strong>Chart Designer <\/strong>what the base figure is that it should use to calculate the percentages.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click the y-axis of the chart to open the <strong>Y Axis <\/strong>section of the chart designer.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/chart_des_yax_vs_crp.png\" alt=\"CD; cropped version of t-axis value scale tab showing highlighted value\" width=\"467\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>The scale is set automatically. Clear the <strong>Automatic <\/strong>check box.<\/li>\n<li>Set the <strong>Maximum <\/strong>value to the respondent base for your survey (205 for snCrocodile).<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>[Apply] <\/strong>to update the chart.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_2d_y_ax_to205.png\" alt=\"Chart style area 3d 12 colour\" width=\"360\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The percentage values displayed on the chart are now correct.<\/li>\n<li>The y axis uses the base figure as a maximum. If you wish to hide the y axis, clear the <strong>Show <\/strong>box on the <strong>Chart Designer <\/strong>dialog.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16724\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/chart_des_yax_scale_crp.png\" alt=\"CS: Value scale tab\" width=\"165\" height=\"94\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>[Apply]<\/strong>. In the left hand pane, work through the Series and select the <strong>Datapoint Labels defaults<\/strong>.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/chart_des_series_tree_crp.png\" alt=\"CD; cropped version of t-axis value scale tab showing highlighted value\" width=\"162\" height=\"254\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Base <\/strong>radio button as the <strong>Text Location<\/strong> in the <strong>Appearance<\/strong> tab. Select <strong>Y Axis<\/strong> in the left hand pane of the <strong>Chart Designer<\/strong> dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Clear the <strong>Automatic <\/strong>check box and set the <strong>Maximum <\/strong>to 205.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>[Apply]<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The chart appears with an unnecessarily precise Y-axis labelling.\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/bar_prec_yax.png\" alt=\"RW: hart xtra sampler\" width=\"364\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can stop displaying the y-axis by clearing the <strong>Show<\/strong> box change the number of grid divisions to a factor of 205 (e.g. 5), so that no decimal places are needed.
