This worksheet explains how to use a combination chart to compare the means of groups of respondents in a satisfaction survey with the mean responses of all respondents.<\/p>\n

The worksheet uses the data provided in the snCrocodile survey supplied with Snap to display the average satisfaction for men and women at the Crocodile cafe against the average satisfaction of all respondents. To make it obvious which the reference values are, they will be displayed as bars, whereas the individual means for men and women will be displayed as points.<\/p>\n

Background<\/h3>\n

The snCrocodile survey includes questions to classify respondents by age and gender. These allow you to use this information to target marketing or to focus on where your service could be improved.<\/p>\n

While you may sometimes wish to compare the groups of respondents directly, you may also wish to see how various groups of respondents have answered when compared to a baseline.<\/p>\n

To create the average respondent, you create a variable that is set to true for all respondents, and you can then analyse the satisfaction of all respondents against the satisfaction of any other groups that you define.<\/p>\n

To make this comparison clear, you can use a combination chart so that the baseline values are displayed in a different format to the selected groups. In this example, a bar chart is used for the baseline values, and line charts are used for the group values. The line charts can be set up to have different symbols for the datapoints of each group.<\/p>\n

  1. Open the snCrocodile survey in Snap.<\/li>\n

  3. Click \"Plus\"\u00a0to create a new variable.<\/li>\n
  4. Set the Label <\/strong>to All Respondents.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  5. Set Type <\/strong>to Derived<\/strong> and Response <\/strong>to Single<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  6. Click in the Code Label area and set the it to All<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  7. Set Values for that code label to True<\/strong>.\n

    2. Change the Chart style to Bar 2D<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    3. Set the Analysis <\/strong>field to Q6a~Q6e<\/strong>. This includes all the satisfaction questions (you can check what they are in the open Variables window).<\/li>\n
    4. Set the Break <\/strong>field to V1: Q10<\/strong>. (V1 is your newly created derived variable, Q10 is the gender question).<\/li>\n
    5. Set the Calculate <\/strong>field to Means & Differences<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    6. Check the Transpose <\/strong>box under Options<\/strong>.\n

      <\/a>Step 3: Styling your chart to display points and bars<\/h3>\n

      1. Open the chart designer by clicking \"Style\u00a0on the chart toolbar. The chart designer dialog appears.<\/li>\n
      2. Highlight Chart <\/strong>in the left-hand pane if it not already selected. This is the section of the chart designer that defines the overall look of the chart.<\/li>\n
      3. Ensure that the 2D <\/strong>radio button is selected and click Combination <\/strong>in the list of chart types.<\/li>\n
      4. Click [Apply]<\/strong> to use these settings without closing the chart designer window.<\/li>\n
      5. Select Series <\/strong>in the left-hand pane. This is the section of the chart designer dialog that deals with the display of the break and analysis data. This is where you specify that in the combination chart, you wish to display the All information as bars, and the data split by gender as lines.\n
