When designing a survey there are always do\u2019s and don\u2019ts so we advise you to bear the following in mind:<\/p>\n<h3>Do<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure your survey has been numbered correctly, i.e. Q1, Q2, etc., by using the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Q1Q2-icon.gif\" alt=\"renumber icon\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" \/>\u00a0button in the <strong>Questionnaire Design Window<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Load the <strong>Default.qsf<\/strong> template by selecting the <strong>Load Style Template<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/template.png\" alt=\"Editions and style templates button\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/>\u00a0button<\/li>\n<li>Apply the grid box style for open-ended questions. By doing so you will be able to use the scanning validation options, which include <strong>Pattern Matching<\/strong> and <strong>Spelling<\/strong>. These options are found in the <strong>Variables Details Window<\/strong>, which is accessed from the <strong>Variables Window<\/strong>. The <strong>Pattern<\/strong> option is designed to help Snap recognise open-ended data on the scanned questionnaires with the pattern expression you have set in the <strong>Pattern Match<\/strong> dialog box. The <strong>Spelling<\/strong> option is used for literal response questions and helps Snap match the data on the questionnaire with a word found in Snap&#8217;s dictionary. These options are also found in <strong>Variables Properties<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Properties.png\" alt=\"Properties dialogue\" width=\"24\" height=\"22\" \/>\u00a0within the Questionnaire Design Window.<\/li>\n<li>Before producing a proper survey, print and test a few questionnaires from the demonstration questionnaire, <strong>snCrocodile<\/strong>, supplied with Snap professional.<\/li>\n<li>Be careful that the correct number of pages and questionnaires have been scanned. If you notice that the current <strong>Case Number<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t match up with the number you write on a questionnaire, then make sure you find out why as it may later lead to problems.<\/li>\n<li>Scan in batches of between 10 and 50 pages. Make sure the numbers line up between the <strong>Case Number<\/strong> written on the questionnaire and the <strong>Case Number<\/strong> represented in Snap, after every batch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Design questionnaires with boxes that are shadowed, contain a coloured background or have a non-rectangular shape, such as a circle.<\/li>\n<li>Design questionnaires with boxes that do not have a clear margin around the perimeter of each box or with boxes that are too close together.<\/li>\n<li>Design questionnaires with background or <strong>Dropout Colours<\/strong> that might conflict with the particular scanner in use. Certain light colours can appear transparent to a scanner but it is manufacturer dependent and light colours should always be used with caution.<\/li>\n<li>Expect to get good results from cases containing poorly written numbers or words.
