{"id":3280,"date":"2012-09-27T16:55:41","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T16:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/?page_id=3280"},"modified":"2019-11-14T10:32:14","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T10:32:14","slug":"analysing-post-codes-zip-codes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/worksheets\/analysing-post-codes-zip-codes\/","title":{"rendered":"Analysing Post codes and Zip codes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The best way of analysing post codes \/ zip codes is to create a <strong>Derived Single<\/strong> variable.<\/p>\n<p>There are some considerations to take into account when analysing post\/zip codes in Snap.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li type=\"i\">Snap is case sensitive, therefore, if the data has been entered into the post\/zip code question in a variety of ways (e.g. <strong>BS8<\/strong>, <strong>bs8<\/strong> or even <strong>Bs8<\/strong>), you will need to account for every possible variation in order to capture all the data.<\/li>\n<li type=\"i\">If your post\/zip codes include letter combinations that could be found in another post\/zip code (e.g. <strong>B7<\/strong> and <strong>BS7<\/strong>), you should put the more complex codes before the simpler ones (i.e. <strong>BS7<\/strong> should be inserted before <strong>B7<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li type=\"i\">If your post\/zip code include number combinations that could be found in another post\/zip code (e.g. <strong>SW1<\/strong> and <strong>SW11<\/strong>), you should put a space after the shorter code (e.g. \u201c<strong>SW1<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>SW11<\/strong>\u201d).<\/li>\n<li type=\"i\">Additionally, It is always best to enter each post\/zip code in inverted commas (e.g. \u201c<strong>BS8<\/strong> 9QT\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>To create the derived single variable, please follow the\u00a0steps below; which will categorise the post\/zip codes by area.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Steps<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Variables window\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/variables-button.png\" alt=\"variables button\" width=\"32\" height=\"29\" \/> and click \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22699\" src=\"\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Plus.png\" alt=\"plus | add\" width=\"24\" height=\"22\" \/> \u00a0to add a new variable.<\/li>\n<li>Select <em><strong>Derived<\/strong><\/em> from the Type dropdown and <em><strong>Single<\/strong><\/em> from the Response dropdown (each respondent will only fall into one of the new codes).<\/li>\n<li>Enter some text in the Label box that describes what this derived variable is for.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Variable-details-window.png\" alt=\"Variable details window\" width=\"569\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Variable-details-window.png 569w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Variable-details-window-150x133.png 150w, https:\/\/www.snapsurveys.com\/support-snap11\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Variable-details-window-500x443.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>(Please note that Derived variables are automatically named starting from V1.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Click into the label column next to code 1 and type in the first post\/zip code area you want to categorise.<\/li>\n<li>Tab across to the Values column and type in the values to search the data. For example when searching for any cases where BS4 has been entered the values would be Q11=&#8221;BS4&#8243; or Q11=&#8221;bs4&#8243; or Q11=&#8221;Bs4&#8243;. Each variation of how BS4 could be written has been accounted for.
