People can complete surveys by:<\/p>\n

  1. Being interviewed (or using a kiosk). If you know that interviewers and kiosks use devices with very different screens (for example, an iPad and a small smartphone), you might want to lay out your survey differently for the different devices.<\/li>\n
  2. Browsing the internet. You can handle different screen sizes by setting up an adaptive questionnaire for Snap WebHost<\/span> that changes according to their screen size.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In some cases you will want people to be able to complete the questionnaire in both ways. This worksheet tells you how to set up a survey with different editions for Snap Mobile Anywhere and Snap WebHost<\/span>. It also tells you how to combine your results.<\/p>\n

    Background<\/h3>\n

    Snap allows you to create different editions of your questionnaire so you can adapt the design to be viewed on a tablet, kiosk screen or smartphone.<\/p>\n

    \n

    If people are completing the survey on their own device (tablet, phablet etc), you need to provide a questionnaire that fits devices with different screen sizes. You do this by creating an adaptive questionnaire for Snap WebHost<\/span>. This means that you provide questionnaires designed for different screen sizes, which Snap WebHost<\/span> will present as appropriate. Snap provides appropriate questionnaire styles for the different devices. These include large button for tablets and kiosks, and small buttons for devices with small screens.<\/p>\n

    If you are using Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> and you know that a survey is only going to be seen on one type of device, you can design for that screen size and set of features. For example, you can design for the tablet you provide for your interviewers.<\/p>\n

    If you are using Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> and you are not sure what device your interviewers will use, then you can provide separate versions of the survey, depending whether they use a tablet or a smartphone. This will mean that you will have to combine the responses in Snap.<\/p>\n

    You will also need to combine the responses in Snap if you are running the same survey on Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> and as an adaptive survey on Snap WebHost<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Step 1: Create a single Mobile edition for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/h3>\n

    If your survey is going to be delivered via an interviewer or a kiosk running Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> you will need to create a Mobile edition of your survey. This is covered in the worksheet: Setting up surveys for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/a><\/p>\n

    1. Start Snap.<\/li>\n
    2. Click \"add\"<\/a>\u00a0at the top of the Survey Overview<\/b> window to create a new survey.<\/li>\n
    3. Set the Publication Medium<\/b> to Mobile and the delivery method to Kiosk<\/b>, Tablet <\/b>or Smartphone <\/b>as appropriate. When you select a delivery method, the appropriate questionnaire styles are loaded for that edition.\n

      Step 2: Assign your survey to the interviewer or kiosk<\/h3>\n

      When you have created your edition for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> you must publish it and make it available to the interviewer or kiosk running Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b>. (This is described in the worksheet: Setting up surveys for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

      Step 3: Create and upload Snap Mobile Anywhere editions for devices with different screen sizes<\/h3>\n

      If you know that your interviewers will be using devices with very different screen sizes (or you are using a kiosk with a large screen and interviewers with smartphones) you can supply two versions of the survey. You will need to create a mobile edition for each screen size.<\/p>\n

      This assumes that you have created a survey for one of the screen sizes.<\/p>\n

      1. Open the Questionnaire <\/b>window of your survey in Snap Professional.<\/li>\n
      2. Click \"template\"<\/a>\u00a0to display the Editions and Style Templates<\/span> dialog box.<\/li>\n
      3. Click [New] <\/b>to create a new edition. A New Survey Edition<\/span> dialog appears.\n

      4. Select Mobile <\/b>as the Publication Medium<\/b>.<\/li>\n
      5. Select Tablet <\/b>from the second drop-down list for a tablet edition (select Smartphone <\/b>for a smartphone\/iPhone\/PDA edition etc).<\/li>\n
      6. The edition Name <\/b>will change to Mobile:Tablet<\/b>. Change this if you wish.<\/li>\n
      7. Select the Load Style<\/b> radio button. The correct default style for that edition will appear in the selection list.<\/li>\n
      8. Click [OK]<\/b>.<\/li>\n
      9. The new edition of the questionnaire will have been added to the list on the Editions and Style Templates <\/span>dialog.<\/li>\n
      10. Click [OK] <\/b>to return to the Questionnaire <\/b>window.<\/li>\n
      11. Make any layout changes required.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

        Step 4: Publish and upload the other edition(s)<\/h3>\n

        When you have created your other edition(s) for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> you must also upload them to Snap WebHost<\/span> and make them available as described in the worksheet: Setting up surveys for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

        1. Publish the survey with a different Access Name to the first Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> edition. By default the published zip file will be placed in a sub-directory named after the edition.\n

        2. Upload the file to Snap WebHost<\/span> as a new survey. It will appear under the same name as the previous edition, but with an _1<\/b> appended to the survey name. Make a note of which edition this is.\n

        3. Assign the surveys to the appropriate interviewers’ accounts. If you need to assign both surveys to the same account, tell your interviewers which one is which (though it should not matter which survey is completed).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

          Step 5: Add adaptive Snap WebHost editions<\/h3>\n

          If your survey is going to be delivered to people using different devices via Snap WebHost<\/span>, you will have to create appropriate Snap WebHost<\/span> editions of your survey and then publish them together. This is fully described in the worksheet Creating an adaptive questionnaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n

          If you are creating a survey that is to be used both on Snap WebHost<\/span> and Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> you must add the Snap WebHost<\/span> editions to the survey.<\/p>\n

          1. Open your survey in Questionnaire – Design Mode<\/b> window using the \"questionnaire\"<\/a>\u00a0button.<\/li>\n
          2. Click the Editions and Style Templates button \"template\"<\/a>\u00a0 to display the Editions and Style Templates<\/b> dialog.<\/li>\n
          3. Click [New…]<\/b> to create a new edition, and in the Publication Medium<\/b> field, select Web <\/b>and Snap WebHost<\/b>.\n

          4. Select Load Style<\/b> to choose a new style for the layout of the questionnaire. Select Default Smartphone.qsf<\/b> from the drop-down list to access the template for a smartphone or Default Tablet.qsf<\/b> for a tablet survey. (You can also browse for style files by clicking the \"browse_slider\"<\/a>\u00a0button.)<\/li>\n
          5. Edit the Edition Name<\/b> to identify the device it is aimed at.<\/li>\n
          6. Click [OK]<\/b> to close the New Survey Edition<\/b> dialog.<\/li>\n
          7. Click [OK] <\/b>to return to the Questionnaire \u2013 Design Mode<\/b> window.\n

            Snap creates a new tab with the Edition Name <\/b>as its title to display the new version of the same questionnaire.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          8. Create further editions as appropriate for respondents who will complete the survey using their device’s browser.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Publishing all the Snap WebHost<\/span> editions to a single file<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Select File | Publish<\/b>.<\/li>\n
            2. Select \"ic_ouput\"<\/a>\u00a0in the left-hand column headed Section<\/b> if it not selected.<\/li>\n
            3. Select Publish Without Preview<\/b> as the Output Method<\/b>.<\/li>\n
            4. Select \"ic_ed\"<\/a>\u00a0in the left-hand column.\n

            5. Select Publish all WebHost editions together<\/b>.<\/li>\n
            6. Click [Publish]<\/b> to publish the survey and create the zip file in the folder you specified.<\/li>\n
            7. You must now upload the survey to the Snap WebHost<\/span> server so that it is accessible by respondents. (See the section Upload the published survey to Snap WebHost<\/span> in the Getting Started guide).<\/li>\n
            8. If you have already uploaded Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> editions of the survey to Snap WebHost<\/span> this survey<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Step 6: Importing all the responses into Snap.<\/h3>\n

              If you have more than one edition of your survey uploaded to Snap WebHost<\/span> (whether it’s for Snap Mobile Anywhere<\/b> or Snap WebHost<\/span>) you will need to combine all the responses together for a full analysis.<\/p>\n

              You will need to download the responses from all editions of the survey and import them into Snap as described in Downloading responses to Snap<\/a>. Analyses and reports will then use all the data.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
