This worksheet describes how to set up a Snap WebHost survey so that devices will see a version of the questionnaire tailored for their screen size.<\/p>\n

To do this you need to create a separate Snap WebHost edition for each screen size (for example, for PC, tablet and smartphone) and publish them with the\u00a0Publish all WebHost editions together\u00a0<\/b>option. This puts all the different questionnaires in one published zip file. Snap WebHost will then deliver the appropriate questionnaire according to the size of the device.<\/p>\n

Background<\/h3>\n

The questionnaires are sent to different devices by Snap WebHost. Snap WebHost sorts the editions in order of page size and selects the largest questionnaire that will fit on the device screen.<\/p>\n

You can identify the different editions using the paradata variable\u00a0ID.format<\/b>.<\/p>\n

If you wish to customise the questionnaire look and behaviour for different devices, you can do so by editing the individual questionnaires.<\/p>\n

Step 1: Set up the different editions<\/h4>\n

This assumes that you have already created a survey with a Snap WebHost edition using the default Web template.<\/p>\n

Now follow the below steps to create the other two WebHost editions for the Smart phone and Tablet.<\/p>\n

  1. Open your survey in\u00a0Questionnaire – Design Mode<\/b>\u00a0window using the\u00a0\u00a0\"Questionnaire\u00a0button.<\/li>\n
  2. Click the Editions and Style Templates button\u00a0\"Editions\u00a0to display the\u00a0Editions and Style Templates\u00a0<\/b>dialog.<\/li>\n
  3. Click\u00a0[New…]<\/b>\u00a0to create a new edition, and in the\u00a0Publication Medium<\/b>\u00a0field, select\u00a0Web\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Snap WebHost<\/b>.\n

  4. Select\u00a0Load Style<\/b>\u00a0and select\u00a0Default Smartphone.qsf<\/b>\u00a0from the drop-down list to use the template for a smartphone. (You can also browse for style files by clicking the\u00a0\"SBW:\u00a0button.)<\/li>\n
  5. Edit the\u00a0Edition Name<\/b>\u00a0to identify the device it is aimed at, e.g. Web:Smartphone.<\/li>\n
  6. Click\u00a0[OK]<\/b>\u00a0to close the\u00a0New Survey Edition<\/b>\u00a0dialog.<\/li>\n
  7. Repeat steps 3 and 4 but this time select Default Tablet.qsf<\/strong> from the drop-down list to use the template for a tablet.<\/li>\n
  8. Edit the Edition Name<\/strong> to identify the device it is aimed at, e.g. Web: Tablet.<\/li>\n
  9. Click\u00a0[OK]\u00a0<\/b>to return to the\u00a0Questionnaire \u2013 Design Mode<\/b>\u00a0window.\n

    Check there are 3 WebHost editions in the Editions and Style Templates dialog box, then click [OK]<\/b> to return to the Questionniare \u2013 Design Mode<\/b> window.
    \nSnap creates a new tab with the\u00a0title being the Edition Name<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    Step 2: Publish your survey<\/h4>\n

    When publishing your survey, you need to check the\u00a0Publish all WebHost editions together<\/b>. This puts all the required files for all visible WebHost editions in a single zip folder. If you do not wish to publish all Snap WebHost editions to a single file, you can hide the ones you do not want. Hidden editions are not visible in the\u00a0Questionnaire\u00a0<\/b>window and will not be published.<\/p>\n

    Hiding editions you don’t want to publish<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Click\u00a0\"Editions\u00a0in the\u00a0Questionnaire\u00a0<\/b>window toolbar to display the\u00a0Editions and Style Templates\u00a0<\/strong>dialog.<\/li>\n
    2. Displayed editions have a check mark in the box next to them. To hide an edition, uncheck the box.<\/li>\n
    3. Click\u00a0[OK]<\/b>\u00a0to return to the questionnaire. The hidden edition(s) will no longer be listed in the edition tabs at the bottom of the pane and will not be added to the zip file when you publish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Publishing all the editions to a single file<\/strong><\/p>\n

      1. Select\u00a0File | Publish<\/b>.<\/li>\n
      2. Select\u00a0\u00a0\"Output\u00a0in the left-hand column headed\u00a0Section<\/b>\u00a0if it not selected.<\/li>\n
      3. Select\u00a0Publish Without Preview<\/b>\u00a0as the\u00a0Output Method<\/b>.<\/li>\n
      4. Select\u00a0\"Edition\u00a0in the left-hand column.\n

      5. Select\u00a0Publish all WebHost editions together<\/b>.<\/li>\n
      6. Click\u00a0[Publish]<\/b>\u00a0to publish the survey and create the zip file in the folder you specified.\n
        You must now upload the survey to the Snap WebHost server so that it is accessible by respondents. (See the section Upload the published survey to Snap WebHost in the Getting Started guide).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Step 3: Check the survey appears correctly on your device<\/h4>\n

        It is a good idea to check that your questionnaire appears as you would expect on your devices. You can either email the survey test link to an account you can access from the device, or type the survey test link into the navigation bar on the device browser.<\/p>\n
