I'm not a USA based user but perhaps I can give you some hints on how we use SNAP for course evaluation ( we've been using it since 1999 ).
We are almost entirely paper based because we can then get a better response rate ( normally this is 70%+ ) and also because it is easier to administer. We have tried web based evaluations but even for distance learning courses which are conducted entirely over the web the the response rate drops to below 30%. We have only managed to get better response rates than this for web evaluations is for one course ( medical students ) where they have to logon on to the system for EVERY adminsitrative aspect of their course. Each time they log on they are 'nagged at' to complete the evaluation and if they fail to after a number of times then they are routed to the evaluation and cannot proceed until it is completed. When this was proposed for other groups of students the reaction was strongly against it. Why the medics agreed / accept it I don't know. Perhaps I see a survey coming up !!!
The paper forms are single sheets but with questions on both sides; the first side contains a block of questions that are the same for all courses and fixed by the University administration. The source of this page is held centrally and added to the second page before printing. The second side contains course specific questions and is maintained by the individual departments. The source of these is E-mail to the central scanning service who print off the 'master' copy of the form which is sent for duplicating double sided. The completed forms are scanned by the central service.
We use locator blocks and exercise tight quality to control to ensure we maintain at least a 99% detection accuracy. We have worn out one high end scanner since 1999 and the second one has just completed 350,000 forms. We have 12000 students taking an average of 5 course modules per year and they complete a form for each one !! plus other surveys !!
I hope that helps - if not please E-mail me directly with any further queries j.s.lemon'at'abdn.ac.uk
By the way - SNAP 9 allows you to create the same survey in different 'editions' so you can have paper and web and share one data file !!! |

Hi All, We are a survey research firm in Rockville, Maryland and just started using Snap a few months ago. We'd like to hear your experiences fielding large scale surveys using SNAP. We started testing Snap online and we are considering setting up our own hosting of surveys with Snap.
