New features in Snap 10.17 – enhanced formatting for mobile phone surveys

Dr Steve Jenkins

Dr Steve Jenkins,  Snap’s MD, comments on the latest Snap upgrade which features even better surveys for mobile phones.

Designing questionnaires for mobile phones raises a number of  problems,

  • there is a wide variety of phones available
  • most have different screen attributes
  • many offer landscape or portrait orientations

To cope with a  myriad of different requirements, Snap web questionnaires will now automatically configure themselves appropriately to the device used.

Simply scaling the standard web controls to fit the screen often results in controls (checkboxes and buttons) that are too small to click on, and text boxes that are too small to read.  The new functions in the latest release of Snap now tend towards rearranging the on-screen elements, whilst keeping as near to the intended design size as possible.

If you are able to target questionnaires for a specific device and specific orientation then use the additional questionnaire page size and margin properties to more tightly fit the screen area available to you.

Other tips to keeping phone-based web surveys clear are to avoid the use of:

  • images for checkboxes
  • slider controls
  • click maps
