Employee Surveys – Understanding Named Category Data for Your Successful Survey

When developing your employee survey or employee questionnaire you will need to determine the ‘type’ of data required for your research.  The ‘type’ of data will determine what types of tables and charts you can produce for your employee survey. 

Named Category Data is one type that you may consider using in your survey.   Also referred to as Nominal Data, it is usually obtained from closed questions in categories with names or labels but, no obvious order to them. 

Example of Named Category Data for Your Employee Survey

Which work shift is your preference? 

 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.           
 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.  
11 p.m. to 7 a.m.   

In which department do you work? 

Administration  
Business Developement  
Finance  
Marketing  
Sales  

This type of Nominal Data can be used in your employee survey to produce tables and charts that use counts and percentages.
