Best Value Tenants Survey 2006/07

Data Download Instructions


  • Open Snap Survey Software
  • Open the relevant survey (e.g. snBVPI Tenants 2006)
  • Click View then Variables

NB there are two different Tenants surveys available, one for Local Authorities (3NB), the other for Registered Social Landlords (3NA). We have used the numbering of the Local Authority version but check the numbering of the variables in Snap – it will differ if you are using the Social Landlords survey OR have added or deleted questions.

Set up Derived Variable to change the Ethnic Questions in a single question.

  • Click the Plus Sign Icon (first left)
  • Click in Name, remove contents and type “V1”
  • Click type and select Derived
  • Click Response and select Single
  • Click in Label, remove contents via delete, type in "V1"
  • Click in the Label Column of Row 1

Set up Derived Variable for “not answered” to Q42 Background Information

  • Click the Plus Sign Icon (first left)
  • Click in Name, remove contents and type “V9”
  • Click type and select Derived
  • Click Response and select Single
  • Click in Label, remove contents via delete, type in "V9"
  • Click in the Label Column of Row 1
  • 1 Type "Not answered", tab across, type "Q42 nr", enter
  • Click on the “tick” button to save changes
  • Click View then Data
  • Click File then Export
  • Ensure Format type reads Comma Separated (CSV)
  • Click on File
  • Browse for desired location and give it a filename
  • Click Save
  • In Content box type (or copy/paste)*: Case,Q1~Q6,V1,Q8~Q34,V8,Q35a~Q37, V2,V3,V4,V5,V6,V7,Q41,Q42,V9,Q43~Q46
  • Highlight the following: Expand multiples, Header row, Label row (not Code labels).
  • Click OK
  • Wait for it to run
  • Locate the file in the specified directory
  • Open the file (Excel)

Export open-ended responses to Ethnic Questions for inclusion in the spreadsheet.

  • Click View then Data
  • Click File then Export
  • Ensure Format type reads Comma Separated (CSV)
  • Click on File
  • Browse for desired location and give it a filename
  • Click Save
  • In Content box type (or copy/paste): Q7b,Q7d,Q7f,Q7h,Q7j
  • Click OK
  • Wait for it to run
  • Locate the file in the specified directory
  • Open the file (Excel)
  • In column type the formula =A1&B1&C1&D1&E1 Drag outside selection to extend this formula downwards to each row of data
  • Select data rows from column F where complete, Click Edit then Copy
  • Insert additional column into original Excel file before column I (new column I)
  • Paste special as values into column I of original Excel file
  • Select data rows where complete, Click Edit then Copy
  • Go to template
  • Select first empty row in first column
  • Click Edit then paste
  • Click File then Save
  • Q3, Q4, Q5 Information about your household specifies that that no reply should be left as blank. Highlight those cells in the spreadsheet and use find and replace to change the “0” to a blank.
  • Process template as required

*If you have assigned a unique serial number for each respondent in your Snap file type this variable name into the Content box instead of “Case”.
